Youth soccer clubs in Alabama

Alabama doesn't have a youth soccer scene as big as Texas or California, but the top tier is easy to read, and most of it sits in the Birmingham area with a newer branch in Huntsville.

Club soccer in Alabama

Parents usually start with two names. Alabama FC, which grew out of Birmingham United, runs ECNL for boys and girls plus ECNL Regional League teams. Hoover-Vestavia Soccer, formed in 2020 from two long-running community clubs, plays MLS NEXT on the boys side and Girls Academy on the girls side. Both also field a deep bench of lower competitive teams in the state's leagues.

Huntsville has been the story of the last two years. Huntsville City FC started an MLS NEXT academy in September 2025 with U13 and U14 teams, and the club said it would add an age group each year until it reaches U19. Alabama FC also joined forces with Huntsville's United Soccer Club in 2024 to form Alabama FC Huntsville-USC, so families in North Alabama now have a local route into the ECNL system without a weekly drive to Birmingham.

Below the national platforms, the Alabama State League covers boys and girls from U11 to U19. It's run by the Alabama Soccer Association, the state's US Youth Soccer member. The same association runs an Across Borders League that links Alabama and Mississippi teams, and a Youth Academy League for the younger ages. Pro soccer is nearby too. Birmingham Legion plays in the USL Championship, and North Alabama SC plays in USL League One out of Huntsville.

Most out-of-state travel goes toward Georgia, Tennessee and Florida for league weekends and showcases, so expect a few long drives once your player reaches U13. Competitive soccer here is a fall to spring commitment, and summer heat shapes how camps and training get scheduled.

MLS NEXT

The Huntsville City FC academy is the youth arm of the MLS NEXT Pro club in North Alabama. MLS listed it among its 2025-26 expansion clubs with U13 and U14 teams, and the club planned to add one age group each year until it reaches U19. That makes it very new, so there's no college placement record yet. It's worth a look for local boys who want a pro club pathway in the Tennessee Valley without moving to Birmingham or Nashville.

Picking a team

Choosing a club in Alabama

Start with where you live. Birmingham families can reach Alabama FC and Hoover-Vestavia Soccer, and the choice often comes down to platform. ECNL is Alabama FC's top level for both genders, while Hoover-Vestavia offers MLS NEXT for boys and Girls Academy for girls. In North Alabama, compare Alabama FC Huntsville-USC with the Huntsville City FC academy, which only has the youngest MLS NEXT ages so far. Ask each club what the second and third teams play in, because most players won't be on the top team at U13.

Tryouts for the next season usually run in late spring, and fall league play starts in August, so ask about summer commitments before you sign. Check the drive to training too, since Birmingham traffic on weeknights adds up. If your child is under U11, a local recreation program or the Youth Academy League is a fine place to stay for a while.

New to all this? Start with how the youth leagues fit together, then read our tryouts guide before Alabama clubs start holding evaluations.
