Club soccer in Kentucky

Louisville has Louisville City FC and the NWSL's Racing Louisville FC, and their academies have been combined under the LouCity Racing Academy banner, with training locations in Louisville, Oldham County, Shelby County and the south end of town. LouCity's boys were the first Kentucky club accepted into the ECNL, heading into fall 2020, and the NWSL Louisville Academy was the first Kentucky club in ECNL Girls that same year.

Lexington's answer is Lexington Sporting Club. In 2022 it absorbed the youth programs of Lexington FC and Commonwealth Soccer Club. The girls joined Girls Academy that fall in the Mid-America Conference, the club also has ECNL Regional League teams in the Ohio Valley, and it appears on MLS NEXT's 2025-26 academy list. A new under-20 boys academy in 2024 irritated some central Kentucky high school coaches, who worried about losing players, so that tension is worth knowing about if your son plays high school ball.

The state's US Youth Soccer member is the Kentucky Youth Soccer Association, founded in 1979. Its top league is the Kentucky Premier League, and it also runs the State Cup, Presidents Cup and several other cups. Outside the two big cities, clubs in Northern Kentucky tend to draw from the Cincinnati area, and Bowling Green and Owensboro have smaller local clubs that send teams to the state tournaments.

Expect a fall and spring season. Winters can be cold enough to push training into indoor facilities. Many families drive to Cincinnati, Nashville, Indianapolis or Columbus for league games and showcases, and tryouts for the next year generally happen in late spring.

Picking a team

Choosing a club in Kentucky

If you live near Louisville, the LouCity Racing Academy is the obvious first call, and its site lists travel clubs, recreation and tournaments alongside the pro pathway. Around Lexington, Lexington Sporting Club has both an academy side and indoor competitive leagues. Ask each club exactly which national platform a given age group plays in, because the leagues change from year to year and the websites don't always say.

Distance matters more here than in a metro like Dallas, since a lot of Kentucky is rural and the nearest elite club could be an hour or more away. Northern Kentucky families may find more choice by looking across the river into Ohio. For kids under U11, a local recreation league or a smaller club is a sensible place to start, and you can move up at tryouts later.

Before you sign anything, read up on what club soccer costs and how tryouts and offers usually work. Most Kentucky families find the second season easier than the first.
