Club soccer in Kansas

The Kansas City suburbs in Johnson County hold most of the state's national-level clubs, with Overland Park, Olathe and Lenexa all packed with fields, indoor facilities and families who cross the state line without thinking about it. Wichita is the other hub, anchored by a Sporting Kansas City affiliate that has grown a lot since it started as a one-team club in 2002.

The state association is the Kansas Youth Soccer Association, which has been recognized as the state body since 1981. Its office sits at the Garmin Olathe Soccer Complex, and it runs the Kansas State Cup, the Presidents Cup and the Junior State Cup, along with ODP and a National League with a Midwest Conference. Most serious clubs in Johnson County treat the state cups as one stop on a bigger calendar.

That bigger calendar is where Kansas stands out among its neighbors. Sporting Blue Valley and Sporting Wichita both appear on the 2025-26 MLS NEXT list for the Heartland group, which is run by the Sporting Development League. Kansas Rush was promoted into ECNL Boys for 2025-26 and also runs an ECNL Regional League side, and its girls play in Girls Academy. Union KC lists ECNL, the ECNL Regional League and Girls Academy across its boys and girls teams. So a family in Olathe can pick between MLS NEXT, ECNL and Girls Academy paths without leaving Johnson County.

Sporting Kansas City plays in Kansas City, Kansas, and its academy affiliate network is a big reason the Sporting name shows up on so many youth jerseys here. Further out, smaller towns lean on the state association for recreational and Presidents Cup play. The clubs below are the ones Kansas parents bring up most often, and each links to its own site so you can check current teams and tryout dates.

Picking a team

Choosing a club in Kansas

Pick the metro first, because Kansas is really two separate markets. In the Kansas City area, the question isn't whether a club is good, it's which league you want and how far you're willing to drive. Johnson County clubs train at complexes like Garmin Olathe, Paragon Star and Scheels Overland Park, and weeknight traffic on I-35 and I-435 adds real time.

Next, match the league to the kid. MLS NEXT is a boys pathway tied to Sporting Kansas City, ECNL and ECNL Regional League run through clubs like Kansas Rush and Union KC, and Girls Academy is offered at Rush and Union KC. Ask what the travel looks like for your birth year, since older teams fly or drive to showcases.

In Wichita, the choices are fewer and the drives shorter. Sporting Wichita registers through PlayMetrics and lists MLS NEXT and National Academy League teams on its site.

Finally, mind the calendar. Union KC has announced that all its teams move to an August 1 to July 31 age window starting in 2026-27, so confirm which age group your child lands in before tryouts.
