Youth soccer clubs in Maine
Maine is a long, thin state with a small population, and youth soccer here is shaped by distance more than by league names.
Club soccer in Maine
Most of the competitive players live in the southern coastal strip around Portland, Falmouth, Freeport and Cumberland, with a second pocket in the Midcoast and another in the Bangor area. Past that, families can face long drives to reach a premier team, which is why so many clubs here are built around regional pools of kids instead of one town.
Soccer Maine is the state's US Youth Soccer association and the governing body for youth play. It runs cups and competitions, a Fall Classic Travel League that starts in August, and the Maine State Premier League, a spring qualifying league for 12U through 19U premier teams that can also take qualified 9U to 11U squads. Many Maine clubs play their serious schedule in spring, with a lighter fall season, which is different from what you'd see in states where national leagues run year-round.
The biggest name is Seacoast United, whose Maine South club trains at fields in Portland, Falmouth, Freeport and Cumberland. The parent club began in 1992 in the New Hampshire seacoast region, and its New England footprint reaches Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Dutch Soccer Academy in Warren runs DSA United, a premier club with players from across the state, and River City Maine in Bangor serves the northern half. NEFC, a Massachusetts-based network, also lists a Maine region.
The pro scene is new. Portland Hearts of Pine plays in USL League One, and a women's team is on the way, which gives older players a professional club to watch for the first time. Even so, Maine kids who want MLS NEXT or Girls Academy tend to look to the Seacoast United pathway, and some travel to New Hampshire or Massachusetts. The clubs below are the names families hear most often, and each links to its own site so you can check current teams, tryout dates and fees.
Popular clubs in Maine
These are the clubs Maine families ask about most. League badges show what we could confirm for the 2025-26 season, so check each club's own site for current teams, tryout dates and fees.
Seacoast United Maine South
Seacoast United's Maine South club is the southern Maine arm of a regional organization that dates to 1992. It trains at fields in Portland, Falmouth, Freeport and Cumberland, and it has separate boys and girls directors. The parent club lists MLS NEXT for boys and Girls Academy for girls at its top levels, but those are run out of its New Hampshire facilities, so ask the Maine staff which teams play where.
Dutch Soccer Academy (DSA United)
Robbie and Tammy Krul started Dutch Soccer Academy in 1997, and it operates from Camden Road in Warren, with an indoor facility called The Pitch opened in 2013. DSA United is its premier club, drawing players from across Maine. The site says tryouts are held in November and practices take place on Sundays. DSA United was also among the winners at the 2026 Maine State Premier League.
River City Maine
River City Athletics is a Bangor-based club with a competitive travel program that plays in the Maine State Premier League. Soccer Maine named it among the 2026 league champions. It uses Fields4Kids on Farm Road in Bangor as a home base. It's the main option for families in the Bangor region who want premier-level play without driving to Portland.
NEFC Maine
NEFC is a Massachusetts-based club network that lists Maine and New Hampshire among its regions, alongside several Massachusetts areas. Its site shows boys and girls teams, a Juniors program for ages 5 to 8, and player clinics. NEFC says it has been developing players for more than 15 years. Maine families should ask the club which team levels and league placements apply to the Portland-area teams.

Meet Recruitly ›Choosing a club in Maine
Start by looking at a map. Maine drives are long and winter weather makes them longer, so a club with practices close to home often beats a bigger name. In southern Maine you have the most options, with Seacoast United Maine South using several fields from Portland to Cumberland. Mid-coast families can look at Dutch Soccer Academy and DSA United in Warren, and in the Bangor region River City Maine is the club to ask about.
Next, ask when the competitive season actually happens. The Maine State Premier League is a spring league, and many clubs hold tryouts in the fall and run indoor training through the winter. DSA United, for example, holds tryouts in November. Expect to check the Soccer Maine site and the club's own page for exact dates.
Finally, decide how much travel you can handle. Players who move toward the national tier usually play games in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, which means weekend trips of two to four hours. State-level premier play keeps that to a minimum.

What is the Maine State Premier League?
It's a spring premier qualifying league run through Soccer Maine for 12U through 19U premier teams. It can also include qualified town classic teams, high school age teams and 9U to 11U premier teams. Results help set up the State Cup, and the league lists age groups by birth year each season.
Does Maine have a professional soccer team?
Yes. Portland Hearts of Pine plays in USL League One. The club has also secured a USL W League side that is scheduled to begin play in May 2027. Youth players in the state still develop through local clubs and Soccer Maine programs.
Where do top Maine players go for national leagues?
Most look to Seacoast United, whose Maine South club trains in Portland, Falmouth, Freeport and Cumberland and whose parent club lists MLS NEXT for boys and Girls Academy for girls. Many of those games take place in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, so families should expect weekend travel.
