Club soccer in Georgia

The metro area spreads across Cobb, Gwinnett, Fulton and Fayette counties, and the better clubs have built training sites in each. Atlanta United's academy, based in the Marietta area, sets the pace on the boys' side in MLS NEXT, and its presence has pushed independent clubs to sharpen their own pathways. Several of those clubs, including Inter Atlanta FC, Southern Soccer Academy and Lanier Soccer Association, also play in MLS NEXT or the National Academy League.

On the girls' side the picture is a bit different. Girls Academy has a strong base here, with NASA Tophat in particular piling up national results, while Concorde Fire and Gwinnett Soccer Academy represent ECNL. A girl hoping to play at the top level will often pick between those two leagues first and the club second, so it's worth watching how each club divides its teams between boys and girls.

Away from Atlanta, two clubs matter a lot. AFC Lightning in Peachtree City has run since 1984 and sits south of the airport, drawing kids from Fayette and Coweta counties. South Georgia Tormenta FC in Statesboro runs an academy tied to its USL League One pro team, which gives families in the southeast corner of the state a real option without a drive to Atlanta. Lanier Soccer Association covers Gainesville and the northeast suburbs.

The state association, Georgia Soccer, runs the state cups and the Georgia leagues that sit below the national ones. Most of the clubs listed here also use the Southeastern Clubs Champions League, a regional circuit that fills the gaps between bigger events. Georgia's mild winters mean fall and spring seasons overlap with a lot of showcase weekends, so expect a full calendar of travel in the older age groups. The clubs below are ones local families mention often, from nonprofit community programs to academies run by pro franchises.

Picking a team

Choosing a club in Georgia

Metro Atlanta traffic is the main thing to plan around. A club with a field in Marietta and another in Peachtree City can be an hour apart at rush hour, so ask exactly where your age group trains. Next, sort out the league. Girls looking at the top tier will find Girls Academy at Tophat, Southern Soccer Academy and Inter Atlanta, and ECNL at Concorde Fire and Gwinnett. Boys can look at MLS NEXT or the National Academy League.

If you're south or east of the city, AFC Lightning, Tormenta and Lanier give you real options close to home. Tryouts usually run in spring for the next season, and several clubs announce 2026-27 dates well ahead of time. Ask about financial aid too. Inter Atlanta and AFC Lightning both run funds for families who need them, and that matters on a travel schedule.

Our guide to choosing a club has the questions worth asking at a tryout, and the costs page explains what a season in Georgia might add up to.

Questions

Georgia club soccer FAQ

Where do Georgia girls play Girls Academy or ECNL?

NASA Tophat runs Girls Academy teams at the Gold and Aspire levels, and Southern Soccer Academy and Inter Atlanta also play in the league's pathway. On the ECNL side, Concorde Fire and Gwinnett Soccer Academy field girls' teams. Check each club's tryout schedule, because the leagues use different age and season rules.

Is there a way to reach MLS NEXT outside Atlanta?

Yes. AFC Lightning in Peachtree City, Lanier Soccer Association in Gainesville and Tormenta FC in Statesboro all list MLS NEXT or related pathways for older boys. Atlanta United's academy recruits through scouting and ID events, so independent clubs are often where players start.

What is the Southeastern Clubs Champions League?

SCCL is a regional league that several Georgia clubs list alongside their national programs, including Concorde Fire, Gwinnett Soccer Academy, Inter Atlanta and AFC Lightning. It fills the calendar between showcase events. Ask your club how many age groups and teams use it before you plan your season.
