Club soccer in Montana

The best players in the state compete in the Montana Youth Soccer Association's Premier and Select leagues, then travel out of state for tournaments and national events. A good club in Montana is one that makes the travel worth it.

Distance is the main fact of life. Bozeman, Billings, Great Falls and Kalispell are each a long drive from the others, so most clubs build a strong home program and then pick a few trips a year. Bozeman's Montana Surf is the clearest example. It runs competitive teams in the Montana Youth Soccer Premier and Select leagues, plays in the N1 league and a regional league it helped start, and has been a Surf Nation partner since 2020. Glacier Surf in Kalispell joined that same Surf network in 2022.

Billings United came from the merger of Magic City Soccer Club and Edge Soccer Academy, and its U19 girls won a US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup title in 2023. In Great Falls, Montana Rush is a member of the nationwide Rush Soccer network and says it has about 1,000 players.

The Montana Youth Soccer Association runs the State Spring League, the State Fall League, the Montana State Cup and the Montana Cup, plus ODP. Winters are long, so futsal and indoor training matter, and fields in Great Falls open earlier in spring than some other cities. The clubs below are the ones Montana parents name most often, and each page links to a club site so you can check teams, fees and tryout dates yourself.

Picking a team

Choosing a club in Montana

Distance matters more than league names in Montana, so be honest about how far you'll drive. If you live in Bozeman, Billings, Great Falls or the Flathead Valley, there's likely one main competitive club close by, and the real decision is whether that club's coaching and age-group depth fit your child.

Ask where the team plays outside Montana. Surf-affiliated clubs like Montana Surf and Glacier Surf can send top players to Surf Select identification events. Those trips add up fast in fuel and hotels, so ask for a typical season budget.

It's also worth asking about winter. Montana Surf lists futsal from December through January, and Montana Rush hosts indoor sessions, so a club with real indoor space keeps skills sharp. Tryouts for spring teams are often held in the fall or winter, and Montana Surf has posted November dates for spring 2027, so check each site early.

Before you sign anything, read up on what club soccer costs and how tryouts and offers usually work. Most Montana families find the second season easier than the first.
