Youth soccer clubs in Iowa
Iowa youth soccer is smaller than its neighbors, and that shapes everything.
Club soccer in Iowa
There's no MLS or USL pro club at the top of the pyramid, no big academy cluster like you'd find around Chicago or Kansas City, and the elite scene is concentrated in two places: the Des Moines metro, including Ankeny and Waukee, and the Quad Cities side of the state around Bettendorf. Cedar Rapids has a deep community club and then the options thin out.
The state body is the Iowa Soccer Association, which runs the State League, the National 1 League, an academy division for ages nine and ten, and the State Cup. Iowa has also built a homegrown Club Development League, which joined US Club Soccer in 2021-22 and gives clubs a competitive league that doesn't require long road trips. National-level platforms are limited to a couple of clubs. VSA Rush in Waukee runs ECNL Boys, ECNL Regional League and Girls Academy, and the site says it's the only Girls Academy club in Iowa. Sporting Iowa, a Sporting Kansas City academy affiliate since 2014, has been in ECNL Girls since 2021-22 and in the ECNL Boys Heartland conference.
That means Iowa families who want national play often accept more travel than usual. Games against ECNL opponents in Kansas City, Omaha, Minneapolis and Chicago are normal, and you should ask a club how many road weekends a typical season includes.
Winter is long. Outdoor fields are unusable for a good chunk of the year, so indoor turf matters, and clubs like Sporting Iowa East with its lit indoor facility at TBK Bank Sports Complex, or Cedar River Soccer Association with two indoor buildings, have a practical advantage.
The clubs below are the names Iowa parents hear most, and each links to its own site so you can verify current teams, fees and tryout dates.
Popular clubs in Iowa
These are the clubs Iowa families ask about most. League badges show what we could confirm for the 2025-26 season, so check each club's own site for current teams, tryout dates and fees.
VSA Rush
VSA Rush formed in 2022 when Iowa Rush Soccer Club partnered with Vision Soccer Academy, and it keeps an office in Ankeny. Boys play in ECNL and the ECNL Regional League and girls in Girls Academy, with National 1 League and Club Development League teams on both sides, all from U13 to U19. The club lists more than 105 college commitments and runs the Mihura Memorial Fund to help families who can't cover costs.
Sporting Iowa
Sporting Iowa came together in 2014 from several Iowa clubs and became a Sporting Kansas City academy affiliate that year. It serves boys and girls from U11 to U19 in the Des Moines area. The girls joined ECNL for 2021-22, after the club was the only Iowa program in the ECNL Girls Regional League, and the boys play in the ECNL Boys Heartland Conference. Sporting KC's youth site lists 13 State Cup champion teams.
Sporting Iowa East
Sporting Iowa East serves the Quad Cities and eastern Iowa from the TBK Bank Sports Complex in Bettendorf, a full indoor turf building with lights where all of its games are played. It is part of the Sporting KC affiliate network and, through a partnership with Sporting Iowa that began in 2017, gives eastern Iowa boys and girls access to the ECNL pathway. The club also runs a fall tournament and referee clinics.
Cedar River Soccer Association
CRSA is a nonprofit youth club in Cedar Rapids with two indoor facilities and a program ladder that starts with Mud Puppies for ages three and four. It runs Pre Academy for ages five to eight, an Academy for nine and ten, and Premier teams for players 11 and up. The site links to the Eastern Iowa Youth Soccer League and the Club Development League, and lists tryouts that include an MLS NEXT track. It also hosts the CRSA ChillOut tournament.
Des Moines Menace Youth Academy
The youth side of the Des Moines Menace runs Junior Menace for ages three to nine and an academy that has held tryouts for U11 to U18 at the Aliber Soccer Complex in West Des Moines. The Menace Academy was a member of the Central States NPL in 2019, and the pro team carries a USL League Two logo on its site. Check the club for the current league placement of its youth teams.

With so few elite options, geography decides most of the choice. Central Iowa families have VSA Rush, Sporting Iowa and the Des Moines Menace youth academy within a short drive of each other, while eastern Iowa families should look at Sporting Iowa East in Bettendorf and Cedar River Soccer Association in Cedar Rapids. If you live in the west or north of the state, expect a longer drive to any serious program.
Next, decide how much travel your family wants. ECNL and Girls Academy mean regular trips to Kansas City, Omaha, Minneapolis or Chicago. The State League, National 1 League and Club Development League keep more games inside Iowa. Ask how that works for your child's birth year.
Tryout timing varies, and VSA Rush for example runs annual tryouts for the following season. Also ask about indoor training from November through March, since fields are often unplayable, and whether the club has financial aid, because a long season adds up fast.
