Club soccer in Oregon

The Timbers and Thorns both play at Providence Park, and the Timbers Academy trains in Beaverton, so a kid in Washington County grows up around the pro game. That western suburb belt, from Beaverton and Hillsboro to Tigard and Lake Oswego, holds most of the state's top clubs. Salem and Eugene each have a serious club of their own, and both play against the Portland clubs in the same leagues.

The ECNL footprint changed in a big way recently. The ECNL boys started a Far West Conference for 2025-26 with eight clubs, six of them from Oregon: United PDX, Capital FC, Eugene Metro, FC Portland, Oregon Premier and Westside Metros. A girls Regional League for the Far West follows in 2026-27, so the same clubs can offer both boys and girls a clear league home. The idea was less travel for Oregon teams, who used to face long trips into Washington, and fewer clashes with high school season. Oregon Surf plays in MLS NEXT, and the Timbers Academy sits at the top of the pyramid in the MLS NEXT Homegrown Division.

Weather shapes the calendar. Fall is wet and winter is wetter, so you'll see a lot of indoor sessions and turf. Spring is short but busy with tournaments, and the club year usually starts with tryouts in late spring.

Oregon Youth Soccer is the state association, and its National 1 league is the top state-run option for clubs that don't sit in a national league. Below that sit competitive, developmental and recreational divisions that serve everyone from kindergarteners to high schoolers. The clubs below are the ones Oregon parents mention most when they're comparing options.

Picking a team

Choosing a club in Oregon

Where you live decides a lot in Oregon. Most of the high-level clubs are on the west side of Portland, so a family in Salem or Eugene may find the best fit in their own city rather than driving an hour or more up I-5. Capital FC and Eugene Metro both run ECNL pathways, so you don't have to move to the metro area to reach a national league. Ask each club which league each age group actually plays in, since a club's ECNL, ECNL Regional League and competitive teams can look similar on a website.

High school soccer is a spring or winter factor too, and the Far West Conference was built partly to reduce conflicts with it, so ask how the club handles supplemental high school tryouts. Tryouts for the next season usually come in late spring. Budget for the real cost, since the larger programs travel to tournaments in California, Arizona and Utah.

Our guide to choosing a club has the questions worth asking at a tryout, and the costs page explains what a season in Oregon might add up to.

Questions

Oregon club soccer FAQ

What is the ECNL Far West Conference?

It is an ECNL boys conference that launched in 2025-26 with eight clubs, six in Oregon and two in Idaho. It was set up to cut travel and reduce overlap with high school seasons. A girls Regional League for the Far West is scheduled to begin in 2026-27.

Can a player in Salem or Eugene reach a national league without moving?

Yes. Capital FC in Salem and Eugene Metro FC in Eugene both run ECNL pathways for boys, and the girls Regional League for the Far West begins in 2026-27. Both are founding clubs in that group, so families in the Willamette Valley do not have to drive to the Portland area for top-level games.

Does the Timbers Academy take players from local clubs?

The Academy fields U15, U16 and U18 teams in MLS NEXT and looks for players who could become Homegrown signings. Oregon Premier FC reports players selected for the 2025-26 Academy, so local club players do move up. Contact the Timbers Academy for the current process.
