Overview

Club soccer in Pennsylvania

In the southeast, the Philadelphia suburbs hold the heaviest concentration of elite clubs. Delaware County, Chester County and Bucks County all have organizations with decades of history, and the Philadelphia Union runs a full academy from its home base. Out west, Pittsburgh has its own set of clubs, a different state association and a shorter list of top-level options. Between them, Harrisburg, Lancaster and the Lehigh Valley have built real academy programs of their own.

The state is split for US Youth Soccer purposes. Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer covers the Philadelphia area, the Lehigh Valley and most of the central counties, while Pennsylvania West Soccer Association handles the western end. Each runs its own State Cup, so a club's results can look very different depending on which side of the line it sits on.

The top leagues are all represented. MLS NEXT includes the Union academy, PA Classics, Keystone FC, Beadling, FC Delco and Penn Rising XI. Girls Academy has a strong presence through Keystone, PA Classics, Penn Rising XI and a group of Pittsburgh clubs. ECNL runs through Penn Fusion in West Chester, FC Delco, PA Rush and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds academy.

History matters here more than in newer soccer markets. FC Delco has been operating since 1982. Beadling in Pittsburgh's South Hills is among the older names in the country, and Penn Rising XI formed through a merger of two Lehigh Valley area clubs. Names like these show up on college rosters and in regional pro academies, so coaches know them.

If you're new to the state, the quickest way to get oriented is to ask a local coach which clubs have players moving up to the Union, the Riverhounds, or college programs. They'll usually give you a short, honest list.

The clubs

Popular clubs in Pennsylvania

These are the clubs Pennsylvania families ask about most. League badges show what we could confirm for the 2025-26 season, so check each club's own site for current teams, tryout dates and fees. For 2026-27, the NPL and the US Youth Soccer National League combined into the National 1 League, which teams enter one at a time, so ask a club which of its teams play in N1.

Philadelphia Union Academy

Philadelphia region · Boys
MLS NEXT

The MLS club's youth system, with the Academy covering U13 to U18 and a pro pathway through Union II. Younger players can join Union Juniors, which covers U9 to U12 and follows a club-and-country model starting in fall 2025. The Union also appears on the official MLS NEXT Homegrown Division list. Training runs through YSC Academy, which the club site links to. For a boy in the Philadelphia area who has a shot at a pro contract, it's the most direct route.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds Academy

Pittsburgh · Boys and girls
ECNL

The youth side of the USL Championship club. The academy site says its top boys and girls teams compete in ECNL and that the pathway leads to its pro and women's teams. Grassroots training starts at age 4, with technical, goalkeeper and speed programs for ages 9 and up, and spring invitational teams from U9 to U16. It also lists a high school summer league with team registration. For western Pennsylvania families, it's the most direct tie to a professional club.

PA Classics

Lancaster · Boys and girls
MLS NEXTGirls Academy

A central Pennsylvania organization with locations in Lancaster, Reading and Harrisburg. Its website lists MLS NEXT, Girls Academy and the Open Academy League, with other affiliations including Aspire, the National Academy League, WPSL, USL League Two and UPSL. The club shows up on the MLS NEXT Homegrown list, and PA Classics Harrisburg also appears separately on the Academy Division list. It's the obvious choice for families between Philadelphia and Harrisburg who don't want a long commute to either city.

Conshohocken · Boys and girls · Since 1982
MLS NEXTECNL

A Philadelphia suburb club operating since 1982, based out of Conshohocken with a presence in Downingtown. Its programs include boys and girls travel teams, a rec league, summer select, a futures academy, camps and year-round tournaments. The club has a girls ECNL program, and it's on the MLS NEXT Homegrown list. The club has also posted a story about 13 of its players earning ECNL all-league honors. Its age is part of the appeal, since coaches and college recruiters in the region already know the name.

Keystone FC

Mechanicsburg · Boys and girls
MLS NEXTGirls AcademyEDP

A Mechanicsburg club near Harrisburg that lists MLS NEXT, Girls Academy, Girls Academy Aspire, EDP and the National 1 League as its competitions. It also fields a women's U23 team and a men's U23 team, which keeps older players inside the organization. The club shows up on the official MLS NEXT Homegrown Division list. PA Rush

New Britain · Boys and girls
ECNLGirls Academy

A Bucks County club that says it has existed for about 25 years. Its site lists travel, intramural and adult leagues, camps and a winter academy, and it displays the ECNL logo. A third-party directory also lists PA Rush in Girls Academy for 2025-26, though that's worth confirming with the club. Doylestown is the area people associate with it, while the mailing address is in New Britain. It gives Bucks County families a competitive option close to home.

FMFooty

Bethlehem · Boys and girls
EDPNPL

A Lehigh Valley club on Oakland Road in Bethlehem, founded by Francis Barilo, who played professionally in Spain. Its teams are grouped under Academy labels, and the site shows EPYSA, US Club Soccer NPL, EDP and US Youth Soccer logos. One fixture on the site is marked ECNL Regional League, but the club's own league status isn't spelled out there. It's a good example of a skills-focused club that's grown quickly in the Bethlehem and Allentown area.

Beadling Soccer Club

Pittsburgh · Boys and girls
MLS NEXTGirls Academy

A Pittsburgh South Hills name with deep roots in the region's soccer history. It appears on the official MLS NEXT Homegrown Division list, and a third-party directory shows a Girls Academy program as well. A recent merger with SCS United was reported for 2024-25, so the structure may have changed since then. For families in Allegheny and Washington counties, it's one of the few places in western Pennsylvania that runs both an MLS NEXT and a Girls Academy pathway.

Picking a team

Choosing a club in Pennsylvania

Geography decides more in Pennsylvania than almost anywhere in the region. A family in Pittsburgh can't reasonably play for a club in Lancaster, and Philadelphia area families can find a top league within 30 minutes in most directions. Check which association a club belongs to, because the east and west state cups and some league rules differ. Ask which of your child's birth years actually play in MLS NEXT, Girls Academy or ECNL, since many clubs field the top level only at some ages.

Winters are cold, and most clubs rely on indoor turf from December to March, so ask about winter fees. Tryouts commonly run in the late spring for the fall season, with some clubs offering open ID sessions earlier. If your child isn't ready for the top tier, look at the clubs' second-tier teams, such as Girls Academy Aspire or the National Academy League, which let players develop without leaving the same organization.

Before you sign anything, read up on what club soccer costs and how tryouts and offers usually work. Most Pennsylvania families find the second season easier than the first.
